A Penny For Piece #2 (2023)

(PERFORMANCE)

Duration: 6 hours

Location: Metropolitan Courthouse, Los Angeles, CA, USA

A Penny For Piece #2 is a durational work for one performer. The performer sits on a stool behind a custom-painted stand reading “Da Ron farm watermelons” with a portrait of the artist in whiteface eating a watermelon. Alongside the artist is a sign that reads “1 cent watermelon seeds for victims of the war.”  Similar to A Penny For Piece #1, #2 was a “sociopolitical temperature test” based on the artist’s hypothesis that social realities are shaped by social interactions and Interpretations, rather than objective truths. The performance evolved into observing and engaging in verbal opposition to the Los Angeles police sheriff’s efforts To Remove Me From The Property Unconstitutionally. Before leaving, the artist was warned that there would be repercussions if they were to set up on the courthouse platform again, despite discussion about the courthouse sidewalk as a public forum.
