(PERFORMANCE)
Duration: 6 hours
Location: Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles, CA, USA
A Penny For Piece #1 is a durational work for one performer. The artist sits on a white rectangular cloth with their legs crossed and 6 mason jars, each painted with a flag design from a respective country. The performer prompts each participant with the phrase “Would you like to donate to the cause?“ A Penny For Piece #1 was a “sociopolitical temperature test” based on the artist’s hypothesis that social realities are shaped by social interactions and Interpretations, rather than objective truths. In the context of political institutions, the beliefs, values, and ideologies propagated by authoritative bodies construct the political climate within a society. The goal was to see how strong certain institutions are. The analysis comes from looking over field journal notes and examining the intensity and prevailing sentiments regarding political beliefs within different institutional settings.
